About the 2004 Kentucky Flute Festival

Campbellsville University is very excited to be hosting the 2004 Kentucky Flute Festival on January 17, 2004 .  Gary Schocker, internationally recognized performer, composer, and teacher, will be the special guest artist for the event.  Mr. Schocker will be presenting a masterclass, a solo recital, and will perform on the Final Concert.  One of Mr. Schocker’s works, a new work for Flute Ensemble, will also be performed by one of the flute choirs at the Festival.

While the main Festival begins on Saturday morning, January 17, 2004 , there will be a special concert on Friday evening, January 16, 2004 .  This 8:00 PM concert will be in the Gheens Recital Hall in the School of Music at Campbellsville University and will feature Kentucky Flutists and some of the Solo Competition winners.  We hope that you will be able to join us early for this wonderful concert.

Kentucky Flute Festival participants will have the opportunity to attend all of the Masterclasses and concerts, as well as rehearse and perform in a flute choir.  If you have never played in a flute choir, this will be an excellent opportunity for you.  Even if you have performed in a flute choir, this will give you the opportunity to play with flutists from around Kentucky and elsewhere.

With paid registration, Flute Festival participants will receive lunch and dinner on Saturday, as well as admission to all events and vendor areas, and a commemorative t-shirt.  You should, however, bring some extra spending money if you would like to purchase some music, a metronome, or even a new flute!

If you would like to apply to perform in the masterclass, you need to send the Masterclass form, a separate check for $10 (masterclass fee), and your registration materials to Dr. Lisa McArthur at Campbellsville University postmarked by 12/1/03 .  Participants will be selected based on a first-received, first-selected basis and the $10 check will be returned to those who are not selected.  Contact Dr. Lisa McArthur at Campbellsville University if you have further questions.

This year’s Festival will once again have a Solo Competition.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners at each level and some performers will be featured in a concert during the Festival.  Specific information about the Competition, including required literature, mailing deadlines, and necessary forms, may be found on the FSK website (www.FSKentucky.org).  If you have any questions about the Solo Competition, please contact Dr. Stephanie Rea (stephanie.rea@murraystate.edu).

Ms. Susan Baumgardner is the chair of the 2004 Kentucky Flute Festival and in the next few months a full Schedule of Events will be posted on the FSK website (www.FSKentucky.org).  Send questions or concerns to FSKentucky@yahoo.com.  We hope to see you there!!

About Mr. Schocker

Gary Schocker is indeed one of the finest flutists performing today.  But he is also a noted pianist and a prolific composer, having written musicals, award-winning works for the clarinet and for the flute, and a wide variety of other material.

His poetic and virtuosic flute playing has brought him great critical acclaim.  Performances feature Schocker's work as a recitalist and concerto soloist, and in duo with guitarist Jason Vieaux.  He also frequently performs programs of music for unaccompanied flute.  He offers both standard works and new works, including his own concertos with orchestra (Green Places, Airborne, and Regrets and Resolutions).

Schocker has performed with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the West German Sinfonia and I Solisti Italiani.  He has collaborated with many artists on stage, including Pinchas Zuckerman, Michael Tilson Thomas, Earl Wild, Jessye Norman, Julius Baker, James Levine, James Galway, Bruno Canino, Oscar Shumsky, Eduardo Fernandez, Jean-Philippe Collard, and the Chamber Music of Lincoln Center.
