Junior Soloist Competition (up to Grade 8)
Recording Round: Bipolar Butterfly by Sonny Burnette. Note: This solo flute piece is much easier than it may look at first glance! Up to three finalists in each category will be selected to compete on January 12, 2007. At the judges' discretion, the First Prize winner in each category will perform at the festival. Previous First Prize winners are ineligible to compete in the same category.
KATHERINE BORST JONES
KATHERINE BORST JONES has been professor of flute at The Ohio State University since 1985. She was awarded the 1995 Distinguished Teacher Award in the School of Music. Internationally acclaimed as a teacher, she is a Visiting Professor at China's Shenyang Conservatory. She was co-founder, teacher, and coordinator for the Robert Willoughby Master Classes at the University of New Hampshire for eight years. In 1976, she created the annual High School Flute workshop program that continues to this day at Ohio State. She has taught at Heidelberg College, Denison University, Emporia State University in Kansas, Oberlin Conservatory, Capital University and at the American Institute for Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. As a member of the National Flute Association she has been president twice, has held a wide array of other offices and was a member of the NFA's delegation to the Soviet Union in 1989. She is a founding member and co-principal flutist of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, principal flute and soloist with the Columbus Bach Ensemble, a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and principal flute of the New Sousa Band, which has toured Japan and the United States. She has recorded for CRI, d'Note and Summit recordings and published with Southern Texas. Ms. Jones studied with Keith Brion, Robert Willoughby, Kyril Magg, Donald McGinnis, and Julius Baker.
DIANNE FRAZER CROSS
As a collaborative artist, DIANNE FRAZER CROSS is most comfortable sharing the stage with other musicians. She has appeared in recital with numerous musicians from all over the world, including Jorma Katrama, Irena Olkiewicz, Meir Rimon, Froydis Re Wekre and Allen Vizzutti. She has been a staff pianist for the International Society of Bassists, the National Flute Association, the International Trumpet Guild, the International Hornists Society, the American School of Double Bass, Lancaster Festival, the Central Ohio Flute Association, and most recently, the World Bass Festival in Poland. Her former trio, Capriccio, was a two-time finalist at the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. She is a member of Basso Bravo with Mark Morton, as well as her duo-piano team, the Cross-Meidar Duo; both groups have toured extensively in the United States, as well as Israel. Dianne has had the privilege of performing with many musicians in the flute world. The list of friends includes Don Bailey, Randolph Bowman, Bonita Boyd, Leone Buyse, Jill Felber, Adrianne Greenbaum, Katherine Hoover, Katherine Borst Jones, Karl Kraber, Paula Robison, Jonathan Snowden and ZAWA!. She holds two performance degrees, has studied with George Haddad, and when she is off the road, is a pianist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra and Opera Columbus.
